Auditions for “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling will be held at the Navasota Theatre Alliance Sunny Furman Theatre on Monday, July 24 and Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 6:45pm. Produced by the Navasota Theatre Alliance, director Earlene Rainey seeks 6  female actresses, along with stage crew and supporting stage hands for this comedy–drama.  This live theatre production is presented by special arrangement with Dramatist Play Service, Inc.  and runs from September 15 through October 1, 2017.

Six women come together  in a hilarious and heartwarming story of life, love, and loss in a small Louisiana parish, where all the action takes place in the neighborhood beauty shop.  At the center of the group is Shelby, newly married and joyfully pregnant, despite the fact that her diabetes could make childbirth life-threatening.  Terrified and angry at the possibility of losing her only daughter, M’Lynn looks to her four closest friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fear of death in order to join Shelby in celebrating the miracle of new life.

The play originally opened Off-Broadway  at the WPA Theatre, in New York City, in March 1987, and was adapted and releases as the popular movie with the same title in 1989, featuring an all-star cast starring Julia Roberts who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Shelby.

For information about the Navasota Theatre and the auditions, character descriptions with age ranges, and play run dates, visit or call 936-825-3195. The Navasota Theatre Alliance is a non-profit 501(c)3 and is located at 104 W. Washington Ave., Navasota.
