Come join the Brazos Valley African Museum in celebrating Juneteenth with “Thursday Night Lights” author Michael Hurd. Learn about his new book and purchase a signed copy. The event will be held on Tuesday, June19th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

Books will be available for purchase for $25. Admission free. Refreshments will be provided.

Michael Hurd is a writer and historian who is director of Prairie View A&M University’s Texas Institute for the Preservation of History and Culture which is documenting 500 years of black history in Texas as an online encyclopedia. His career includes an eight-year stint in the U.S. Air Force as a medic, serving one year (1971) at Phu Cat Air Base, Vietnam. He was honorably discharged with the Air Force Commendation Medal. He is a graduate in Journalism of the University of Texas at Austin and has worked as a sports writer at the Houston Post, the Austin American-Statesman, USA Today, and Yahoo Sports. He has authored two books, including “Black College Football, 1892-1992,” the only book that comprehensively documents the legacies of football programs at historically Black colleges. For more than a decade, he served as a member of the National Football Foundation’s Honors Court for Divisional Players, the group that selects small college players to the College Football Hall of Fame, and he currently serves on the selection committee for the Black College Football Hall of Fame. He is a board member for the Writer’s League of Texas and his third and most recent book, “Thursday Night Lights, The Story of Black High School Football in Texas,” was released by the University of Texas Press in October 2017.”

The city of Bryan has provided a summary of proposed changes to the current animal ordinance. Tonight is the chance to speak to city officials. Comments by e-mail are being accepted through tomorrow.Friendly reminder! Today you have an opportunity to provide much wanted feedback on proposed changes to the existing animal ordinance. Citizens are welcome and encouraged to join us October 18th at 5:30 PM in Council Chambers for the Bryan Animal Center Advisory Committee meeting to share their thoughts.

These proposed changes are being discussed in an effort to update the City’s animal ordinance to better reflect adherence to state law, support community needs, and promote best practices in addressing common concerns.

You are able to review these ahead of time at Bryantx.gov/animalordinance. In the event you cannot join us in person for the meeting, please submit your comments in writing at animalservices@bryantx.gov by October 19th.
