Open House Of Bryan ISD’s New Administration Office Includes Return Of Portrait & Plaque

The public got its first look at the Bryan school district’s new administration offices at an open house on Monday.

This is the third use of a building that began in 1937 as a high school and was converted to a middle school in 1990.

Bryan ISD communications director Matt LeBlanc says during the latest project, the district learned that Bryan’s First Presbyterian Church had a portrait and plaque of the high school’s first principal.

LeBlanc says someone retrieved the portrait and plaque during a prior project and stored them at the church.

The principal, Wesa Weddington, was a granddaughter of Harvey Mitchell, who was among the first settlers of Brazos County.

Weddington began teaching in Bryan in 1903. She earned a Masters degree from Columbia University in 1918. And she continued teaching while serving as the high school principal from 1920 through 1946.
