Bryan Police Update Includes Joint DWI Enforcement Campaign This Weekend

Officer Kelley McKethan of the Bryan police department visits with WTAW’s Bill Oliver about this weekend’s increased DWI enforcement, motorcycle safety reminders for operators and other motorists, registration for BPD’s Junior Police Academy, and locations of increased traffic enforcement.

More about this weekend’s increased DWI enforcement from College Station police:

In an effort to enhance safety on area roadways the College Station Police Department has coordinated a DWI Task Force to operate during Chilifest weekend. This effort will be accomplished with cooperation and assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas A&M University Police Department, Bryan Police Department, Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, Brazos County Attorney’s Office, local Magistrates, the College Station Medical Center, Scott and White Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Local law enforcement will utilize multiple officers, deputies and troopers to focus on DWI violations. If a DWI arrest is made, the suspect will be asked to give a sample of their breath or blood in order to determine the alcohol concentration or presence of a controlled substance or drug in their body. If the suspect refuses to provide a sample of breath or blood, a warrant will be sought for a blood sample from the suspect. If the Magistrate issues a warrant, a blood sample will be taken from the suspect to provide evidence in the DWI case. On April 14th, 15th, and 16th the resources necessary to obtain the warrant and subsequent blood draw will be on hand for law enforcement making DWI arrests.

This effort is not only intended to discourage anyone from drinking and driving, but is also intended to provide evidence in DWI cases against those who choose to drive while intoxicated. It is the intent of all agencies involved in this effort to prevent property damage, injury, and/or death that is the result of driving while intoxicated.

As a safe alternative to driving under the influence, there will be a shuttle service operating from the Post Oak Mall in College Station, Texas. Buses will begin running at 9am on Saturday April 16th, to help Chilifest attendees get to and from Chilifest safely and will run to and from the event until 9pm on Saturday April 16th. Upon returning to Post Oak Mall, Carpool and taxicabs will be available.

Taxi cab fees will apply. We want EVERYONE over the age of 21 to drink responsibly and get home safely by utilizing the resources available. Please designate a driver – don’t drink and drive.
