Two Brazos County District Court Juries Return Guilty Verdicts In Criminal Cases

It took 35 minutes for a Brazos County district court jury to convict a Bryan man of nearly killing another man almost two years ago. Then the jury spent 45 minutes considering punishment. 36 year old Wakeem Mathis, Jr. was sentenced to 70 years. Half the time has to be served before becoming eligible for parole. The jury also assessed a $10,000 dollar fine. Mathis repeated during the trial what he told Bryan police in April 2018 that he was defending himself when he stabbed and cut the victim 25 times. According to the BPD arrest report, the victim was hospitalized in a medically induced coma after receiving several life threatening knife wounds at his apartment. The victim was among those who testified.

Another Brazos County district court jury took about one hour to find an east Texas man guilty of sexually assaulting an 11 year old Brazos County girl almost three years ago. According to the district attorney’s office, the trial judge sentenced 40 year old Kevin Deggs of Hillister to 45 years in prison with no possibility of parole. Prosecution witnesses included three victims…the local girl, a 12 year old girl from Tyler County, and an adult who was abused by Deggs in 1998 when she was 12 years old. Deggs was convicted of continuous sexual abuse of the girls from Brazos and Tyler counties.
