20th Anniversary of Bonfire Collapse

Most Texas A&M students had not been born when the Bonfire collapsed on campus 20 years ago.

Although the tradition does not continue on campus, the memory of the tragedy remains.

On Monday at 2:42 a.m., Aggies will gather at the Bonfire Memorial for the annual Remembrance Ceremony.

Bonfire Remembrance Committee Chair Brooke Wilson says regardless of the anniversary number, they want to remember the 12 Aggies lost in the same way.

“That was something that was decided by the families 20 years ago, so we try to be really respectful and conscious of nothing changing anything too much,” said Wilson.

Wilson says they do expect a larger than normal crowd this year.

“Come out and join us in standing with the Aggie family to remember the 12 we lost. It is 20 years, so we hope to keep their memory alive,” said Wilson.

A reflections display is available in the Memorial Student Center Flag Room through Monday for those who wish to remember the lives of those who were lost in the collapse.
