Texas A&M’s New Athletic Director Speaks At The B/CS Chamber Membership Luncheon

Texas A&M’s new athletic director pointed out when speaking to those attending Tuesday’s Bryan/College Station chamber of commerce membership luncheon that he was in the 93rd day on the job.

Ross Bjork opened his 40 minute appearance by saying “I hope this is the last job that we have.”

Bjork says he is counting the days to cherish the moments, adding “when you’re the new guy…milk it”.

Bjork says he can not operate A&M athletics behind the desk. His scheduler told him he has attended more than 400 meetings and events since starting July 1st.

Bjork talked about the head coaches in football, men’s and women’s basketball, and volleyball.

He also gave his explanation of how athletics work with academics, where athletics is not the most important thing but is the most visible.

In his first 93 days, Bjork learned that Aggies like to gather, love A&M almost unconditionally, serve others, always believe “we can do something better”, do it the right way, work hard with a sophisticated blue collar mentality, and “do not want to play T-SIPS”.

The reference to the A&M-Texas football series generated a response from an audience member who said there is support to bring it back. Bjork received applause after saying “Right now, I don’t think we need them. I think we’re in the SEC and we play championship teams every week.”

Bjork says the athletic department is kicking off a new economic impact study, the first since 2012 where the department estimated an impact of $120 million dollars.

Bjork reviewed recent facility upgrades and said future projects might include Reed Arena, the area between Kyle Field and George Bush Drive, and the area around Olsen and Tom Chandler.

After his prepared remarks, Bjork fielded questions about reconciling multiple issues of paying college athletes and whether they should receive stipends, what to do when you are promoted into a leadership position, the traffic at the intersection of George Bush and Wellborn, Bjork’s preconceptions about College Station before moving here, and recruiting a Waffle House to town.
