The longtime treasurer of the Wellborn Community Center admits to stealing thousands of dollars the last seven years.

According to the arrest report from College Station police, 64 year old Mary Beth Hammock is accused of making 310 unauthorized transfers from the center’s bank account between August 2012 and April 2019, totaling almost $95,000 dollars.

Hammock told detectives she thought the amount was around $58,000. She added she would not be surprised if the amount was closer to $90,000.

Hammock resigned after being confronted by board members in April about a $500 dollar payment for a credit card the center did not have.

She said it began when she decided to borrow money one month to pay personal bills. According to the arrest report, she planned to pay it back “but never got around to it and fell into the cycle of taking more and more over time.”

Hammock told the detective she “has no one to blame but herself” for paying off at least ten personal credit card accounts.

She told the board she would pay back as much of the money as possible in small increments over an undetermined amount of time.

She told detectives she was able to manipulate the treasurer’s report because there were no checks being done.

Hammock, who was arrested on a charge of misapplication of fiduciary property, is out of jail after posting a $20,000 dollar bond.
