George H.W. Bush Library and Museum Receives Gift from German Chancellor

The George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum was gifted a photograph recognizing the former president’s role during the reunification process of Germany.

Emily Haber, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United States, who presented the gift on behalf of German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, said the idea came after the passing of the former president.

“It was then that she decided she wanted to donate a gift the library and museum in order to tell people how important this president was for my country,” said Haber.

Haber says the photograph of Bush, Mikhail Gorbachev and Helmut Kohl was taken on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall by photographer Andreas Muhe.

“It is a very impressive picture because they are placed in a large, empty space, and even the segments of the wall seem small. It is a picture that signifies the relevance of history,” said Haber.

There are five prints of the photograph. One of them is in Chancellor Merkel’s office and the others are in private hands.
