Bryan School Board Approves Pay Schedule For 2019-20 School Year

Just over a week after the governor signed reforms in school finance and property taxes, the Bryan school board has approved staff recommendations for pay raises next year.

Assistant superintendent Kevin Beesaw explained how new state laws determined what could be considered for pay raises. For most of us, the only thing you’ll understand about the state’s “mandatory compensation adjustment” regulations is what Beesaw says at the end…that it is “clear as mud.”

David Stasny, who is nearing 30 years on the Bryan school board, noted the history being made because lawmakers approved additional funding without being under the gun by state supreme court orders.

Superintendent Christie Whitbeck says she has never seen such an aggressive move towards taking care of people”. That was in response to the average teacher, librarian, counselor and nurse in BISD making an additional 4.7%-14.0% with larger increases for more experience.

A teacher entering their second year in BISD is getting a raise of $2,025 dollars, while the most veteran teacher will receive an additional $9,000 dollars.

Counselors will receive a $3,500 dollar raise, special education paraprofessionals will get between $2,500 and $3,500, and professional and administrative employees will get three percent more.

Ten percent raises are going to BISD custodial, school nutrition, auxiliary staff, bus drivers, and transportation aides. Additionally, the starting pay for bus drivers was increased by $2.50 an hour.
