Almost 15 Years In The Making, University Drive Improvements In Northgate Are Finishing Soon

Since 2005, the city of College Station has been working on improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety along University between Texas and Wellborn.

The city’s traffic engineer, Troy Rother, says the multimillion dollar project will be completed this summer.

The actual construction began last year of sidewalks, medians and traffic signals.

Rother says medians on University were built to create refuge areas for pedestrians at intersections. New traffic signals are supposed to improve pedestrians crossing streets. And shared use paths were built to handle more pedestrians and bicyclists.

Additionally, the new traffic signals are timed to include a pedestrian-only signal phase. That will stop vehicles long enough to allow pedestrians sufficient time to cross safely.

Rother posted an update on the city’s blog the week after TxDOT held a public hearing on Brazos County’s proposed regional mobility authority…which is looking at building a tunnel under University for motorists to bypass Northgate and Texas A&M. Rother says if and when that happens, he hopes there is right of way for pedestrian crossings.
