Union Pacific Halts Construction Of Mumford Railyard

The Wall Street Journal reports Union Pacific has halted construction of the largest project in company history, the Brazos Railyard in Mumford.

A UP spokeswoman confirmed to WTAW News the railroad is “pausing construction” of the $550 million dollar complex. She was not available to record an interview.

Lance Fritz, who has been UP’s president and CEO since July 2015, told the Journal the railroad does not need the Brazos Yard as soon as they originally thought.

Fritz joined UP after the company announced the project nearly seven years ago. The Journal reports UP adopted a new operating plan last year that has freed up capacity that reduces the immediate need of the Brazos Yard.

When the project was originally announced, UP planned to have 1,000 private construction workers. After construction began in January of last year, the maximum number was 300. A month ago, the number dropped to 90.
