Bryan Planning & Zoning Commission Supports City Council First Annexation Attempt In 20 Years

The next step has been taken in the Bryan city council’s first annexation attempt in 20 years.

During a special meeting of the planning and zoning commission, recommendations unanimously made to annex property on the city’s west side in and around the RELLIS campus, and in and around the Texas Triangle industrial park on the north side.

That would grow the amount of land in Bryan by almost 25 percent.

P&Z chairman Bobby Gutierrez was among talking about controlling development in what’s nicknamed as Bryan’s “western gateway”.

Gutierrez also noted getting city services to the Bryan school district’s new career and technical education center. That’s as private fundraising continues to equip the center, which is in the northside annexation area.

There were two speakers during P&Z’s public hearing. One man said he’s still waiting for city services 12 years after annexation. The second speaker called on developers to be required at the outset to build sidewalks for pedestrians and bicyclists.

P&Z and the city council want to beat 19 bills in the state legislature regarding annexation. That includes a proposal that would allow county residents to hold an election.

The current timetable calls for public hearings before the city council on April 23rd, and final council action on May 28th.

The RELLIS area annexation is part of the city’s comprehensive plan, but not the proposed northside annexation based at the Texas Triangle Park. The proposed northside annexation area also stops before the Benchley community.
