The Week After Bar Fights Around The Northgate District And Downtown Bryan

The week following bar fights involving gunfire and serious injuries, businessowners around College Station’s Northgate district and in downtown Bryan, the topic came up during regularly scheduled meetings with city officials.

The president of the Northgate District Association, Barry Ivins, thanked the police department for the quick response to what’s been described as isolated incidents. Ivins says there hasn’t been that type of activity in at least ten years. In the past, Ivins says police response took minutes where now it takes seconds.

Another bar fight last weekend was in downtown Bryan, where the police department’s Kelley McKethan says an neighborhood enforcement officer meets weekly with businessowners. Before last weekend’s incidents, BPD added bicycle patrol officers downtown. And there’s been an increase in patrol vehicles around bars around the city.

McKethan and Ivins both promote enjoying the entertainment areas in groups.
