Two Brazos County District Court Juries Deliver Guilty Verdicts In Criminal Cases

Two Brazos County district court juries handed down guilty verdicts in criminal trials this week.

One jury took 12 minutes to convict a man for family violence assault with prior convictions. 35 year old Trumaine Carter of Bryan, who was described by the district attorney’s office as a career domestic violence abuser, was found guilty of dragging a woman by pulling her hair and repeatedly punching her in the face. The incident in November of 2017 took place outside a Bryan motel. Carter was sentenced to 45 years, in part because of his criminal history of eight felony and 11 misdemeanor convictions. At the time of his arrest, Carter was accused of assaulting the same victim nine times over a four month period and threatened to kill the woman twice.

Another jury took one and a half hours to convict a College Station man for the March 2017 armed robbery of a Bryan convenience store. 29 year old Justin Hemphill, who denied pulling a gun on the owner of the Bryan Drive-In at Palasota and Groesbeck, was sentenced by the trial judge to 55 years. Trial evidence included Hemphill being seen on the store’s video system and testimony from his sister and niece. Hemphill is still awaiting two trials on charges from November of 2016. He is accused of attempting to force his way into a former girlfriend’s apartment and failing to register as a sex offender.
