UPDATE: College Station Council Awards Construction Contract For New Police Headquarters

Update:

Here is an update to our story about the College Station city council awarding a construction contract for the city’s new police department headquarters building.

The project manager tells WTAW News the new building includes a large breakroom. But the break room does not have a commercial kitchen that includes a stove or oven.

Councilwoman Linda Harvell, who expressed her frustration Monday night, told WTAW News “considering CSPD is an operation that never closes and has officers and dispatchers working around the clock…to only offer a microwave is not very efficient or user friendly.”

And Harvell also said the new PD building will not have a jail, so those who are arrested will be taken to the Brazos County jail.

And the project manager also tells WTAW News it’s the construction budget of the new building is within $167,000 dollars of its limit.

WTAW News has asked the city how much remains in the project’s overall budget.

According to the project manager, the “total project budget is $29.5 million dollars. That number minus the GMP (the guaranteed maximum construction price of $24,833,300) is the amount of funds that will be used to cover owner related costs and/or costs not covered by the contractor / GMP. There are no project savings at this time.”

Original story:

With $167,000 dollars to spare in the budget, the College Station city council has agreed to a nearly $25 million dollar contract to build a new police department headquarters campus at Dartmouth and Krenek Tap.

While Monday night’s vote was unanimous, Linda Harvell says she did not know until officers told her recently that the new building does not include a break area.

Weather permitting, construction is scheduled to start November 12th and be completed by the end of February in the year 2020.

The official groundbreaking ceremony is set for November 16th.
