Bryan Council Receives Westside Annexation Recommendations

The Bryan city council has been given several options for annexing land on the city’s west side.

Most of this week’s workshop discussion was about annexing the Texas A&M system’s RELLIS campus.

City manager Kean Register says the only roadblock is building and operating a fire station.

The estimated construction cost is $12 million dollars and the estimated operating cost is $1.6 million a year.

Councilman Mike Southerland and Register discussed applying at RELLIS, the arrangement Bryan and College Station have with the system for a fire station at Easterwood Airport.

Volunteer firefighters currently provide service at RELLIS.

Bryan fire chief Randy McGregor says the current fire insurance rating at RELLIS is an eight, with ten being the worst. The city of Bryan recently improved its rating to a one.

Mayor Andrew Nelson and Register will continue to visit with system officials…who includes former College Station city manager Kelly Templin…who manages the RELLIS campus.

No direction was given by the council to any of the westside annexation options outside of RELLIS.
