Bryan School Board Looking At Paying Record Vehicle Insurance Premium Following A Record Year Of Claims

The driving record for Bryan school district employees was bad enough over the last 12 months that the district’s insurance company paid an all time high in claims.

Board members learned this week $264,000 dollars were paid in claims during the 2017-18 school year. Of that, $256,000 went to settle 25 claims involving Bryan ISD buses.

Chief financial officer Kevin Beesaw said claims and market conditions were the reasons only one insurance company was interested in covering the district starting September 1, and the annual premium from the same carrier will rise from $89,000 to $180,000 dollars.

Superintendent Christie Whitbeck says they considered increasing the deductible, but that was not financially feasible.

Board member Trey Moore suggested the district consider what other governmental units have done, by charging employees who caused damage by their negligence the amount of repairs or a $1,000 dollar fine.

Board members were told vehicle insurance claims during the past four school years totaled $417,000 dollars. More than 60 percent of that total was during the 2017-18 school years.

2017-18 school year claims totaled $264,000.
2016-17 school year claims totaled $27,000.
2015-16 school year claims totaled $108,000.
2014-15 school year claims totaled $18,000.
