Bryan/College Station, TX. (May 29, 2018) – As many people celebrate National Donut Day, it’s important to remember that the warm, delicious treat also serves as a symbol of hope. Started by The Salvation Army on the first Friday in June in 1938, National Donut Day was created to honor the Donut Lassies who served the sweet treats to soldiers on the frontlines of World War I.

“Armed with a helmet, rolling pins and donut supplies, the Donut Lassies provided the soldiers a piece of home from the trenches of eastern France,” said Lt. Col. Ward Matthews, national community relations and development secretary for The Salvation Army. “The donut was and continues to be a symbol of the comfort and support that The Salvation Army provides to more than 23 million people in need each year.”

To commemorate the work that the Donut Lassies started in 1917 and to demonstrate the impact of a small token of kindness, The Salvation Army will deliver thousands of donuts around the country on National Donut Day, June 1, 2018. Locally in Bryan/College Station; The Salvation Army Bryan/College Station is partnering with all Shipley Do-Nuts stores in the area to provide one free glazed donut to customers while supplies last. Salvation Army Red Kettles will be set up at each shop throughout the weekend to collect donations for local Salvation Army programs. Those who enjoy a donut on National Donut Day are asked to share a picture to their social media profiles using #GivingIsSweet. Proceeds from all donut sales on national donut day will go toward the various Salvation Army Bryan/College Station programs serving the local community.

Shipley Do-Nut locations participating in the event include:
• 1760 Greens Prarie Rd. W., College Station, Texas 77845
• 1716 Southwest Parkway, College Station, Texas 77840
• 210 E. Villa Maria Rd. Bryan, Texas 77801
• 3001 Wildflower Dr. #101, Bryan, Texas 77802

Shipley Do-Nuts currently has more than 300 franchise locations in the United States. Shipley’s was created when Lawrence Shipley, Sr. designed a gourmet recipe for his donuts. Back in 1936, when Shipley first created the recipe, his donuts were cut by hand and served warm during the day. Shipley’s goal was to continue selling hot donuts to customers. He said “When they bite into that hot donut, it will bring them back every time”.
