Texas A&M Men Defeat Baylor to Advance to Round of 16 for 14th Time

Final Stats COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 5 Texas A&M men’s tennis team topped No. 18 Baylor, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center to secure their 14thtrip to the Round of 16 in program history.

The Aggies (24-5) defeated the Bears (21-10) and will take on the winner of No. 11 Florida State and Alabama at 6 p.m. (CT) on Friday, May 18, in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Aggies advanced to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four seasons and in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2011.

The Maroon & White took the advantage early in the match, claiming the tightly contested doubles point. All three doubles matches stayed one serve through four games before No. 3 Juan Carlos Aguilar and Jordi Arconada claimed a break and cruised to a 6-3 win on court one over Johannes Schretter and Akos Kotorman.

Seniors AJ Catanzariti and Arthur Rinderknech won for the second straight day, the pair broke on the final game to defeat Sven Lah and Roy Smith, 6-4 on court two and give the Aggies the early lead.

The Aggies maintained a bit of scoreboard pressure, winning four of six first sets in singles play including a pair of tie-breakers. No. 72 Valentin Vacherot did not waste much time doubling the A&M advantage, the sophomore defeated Will Little 6-0, 6-3 on court four. Vacherot improved to 15-5 on court four, winning his fourth straight match.

Vacherot’s cousin, No. 12 Rinderknech, put the third point on the board for the Aggies. The Paris, France native, defeated Matias Soto 6-3, 6-2 on court two. Rinderknech claimed his 65thdual match victory to improve to 11th on A&M’s all-time wins list.

Baylor did not go away without a fight, getting a point from Smith on court five over Aguilar.

No. 48 Arconada punched the Aggies ticket to the final site with a 7-6(5), 6-4 win over No. 122 Lah on court three. Arconada continued his dominant play on Saturday, winning team-best 22nd dual match of the season to become one of just the 16 players in program history to claim 22 wins or more in a single season.

Post Match Quotes
Texas A&M Head Coach Steve Denton
On Today’s match…
“It was a big match for us and I’m happy for our seniors especially to be able to finish on this court playing like they played, really happy for Jordi and Arthur especially as they closed out career at A&M on high note and gave us a chance to keep competing in this tournament. Baylor has a great program, Matt Knoll has done an unbelievable job with his players and they come to play in May and they competed hard today and we knew that and our guys were able to play well in doubles today and get that doubles point under our belt and then were able to stay on top in most of the singles matches which kept scoreboard pressure on them. We had a couple of key tiebreak wins in the first set on Jordi’s court and AJ ‘s court, two seniors that were able to kind of keep the pressure on them by winning those first sets.”

On Doubles…
“We did a god job holding serve today, that is the name of the game, you got to lose tiebreakers if you hold serve and we did a good job there we got a lot of first serves and our guys were pretty active around the net when they were there. We are pleased with that. Baylor is a good doubles team, they had a lot of success in doubles and for us to put that point on the board was very important today.”

On Arthur Rinderknech
“This win couldn’t have come at a better time, he has been working really hard. I think there is a lot emotion for him knowing it’s the last time around, uncertainty about his future like all these seniors are to be able to handle all that and to just step on the court and play tennis sometimes gets a little complicated and the last couple of weeks I feel like he has relaxed and played better and working hard on his game, graduated and all those things and now he can concentrate on tennis.”

On Valentin Vacherot
“He’s been playing well. He served very well today and thought and played at a high level. He’s capable of playing really good tennis. Last year at the end of the year he hit a wall a little bit as freshman and he’s managed that a little bit better the second time around as a sophomore and understands what needs to happen. Obviously playing at a pretty high level and seems to have a lot of juice left in the tank and that is good for us.

On the seniors…
Proud of these guys fought so hard and helped so much over the last couple years so it’s so great to see the smiles on their faces to get to keep going and extending this journey. It’s not going to last forever but hopefully we can keep working here and keep playing and get a little bit deeper and who knows what will happen.”
