COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 19 Texas A&M jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and fought off late rallies by the Texas Longhorns to post a 6-5 win in the latest edition of the Aggies’ most-played rivalry.

Texas A&M’s 4-5-6 hitters each logged two-run singles on the evening, finishing a combined 5-for-12 with two runs and six RBI. Will Frizzell and Cole Bedford stacked their sets of RBI in the four-run first inning and Hunter Coleman got his two-run hit in the sixth, when he fouled off five two-strike pitches before punching a single to leftfield.

The Aggies used six pitchers in the contest. Chandler Jozwiak battled through 3.0 scoreless frames as the starter, scattering two hits and three walks while striking out five. Cason Sherrod (2-1), who limited some fifth-inning damage, earned the win, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two in 2.0 innings. Nolan Hoffman earned his fifth save of the season. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and a 1-2-3 ninth, finishing the night with 1.2 blank frames with two hits and one walk.

With the victory in the 369th meeting of the Lone Star Showdown, Texas A&M improved to 24-9 on the season while the Longhorns dropped to 22-13.

The Aggies return to SEC play on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park Thursday when they host the Alabama Crimson Tide in an 8:02 p.m. contest on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

B1 | The Aggies drew first blood with a four-run frame. With one out, Logan Foster drove a full-count pitch into centerfield for a single and Braden Shewmake and Hunter Coleman drew walks to fill the bags with Ags. Frizzell bounced a single up the middle to knock in two and Bedford went the same way with a 2-0 pitch for a two-run single. A&M 4, TEX 0.

T5 | Texas trimmed the margin to one run with three runs. With one out, Tate Shaw gapped a single to right-center and Masen Hibbeler drew a walk to drive reliever Stephen Kolek from the contest. Kaylor Chafin entered the game and yielded a two-run double to Kody Clemens and an RBI single to Zach Zubia. A&M 4, TEX 3.

B6 | The middle of the order did damage again for the Aggies. With one out, Michael Helman and Logan Foster drew walks and they both moved into scoring position with a grounder to first by Shewmake. Coleman fell behind the count 0-2 and fouled off five of the next six pitches before punching a 1-2 offering to leftfield for a two-run single. A&M 6, TEX 3.

T7 | Clemens started the inning with an infield single and Zubia drew a six-pitch walk. David Hamilton pushed both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and another infield single, this one by Ryan Reynolds, plated Clemens. A&M 6, TEX 4.

T8 | Texas continued to chip away from the Aggies’ lead. With one out, Shaw reached on an infield single. He was replaced at first by Hibbeler who bounced into a fielder’s choice grounder to second. Hibbeler stole second base and scored when Clemens laced a single through the right side. Texas would load the bases before Hoffman induced a grounder back to the mound by Reynolds to end the rally. A&M 6, TEX 5.
