Kilkenny Named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M junior Mitchell Kilkenny was named Southeastern Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week the SEC announced Monday. The right-hander shared the weekly honor with Missouri’s Michael Plassmeyer.

Kilkenny logged the SEC’s only 9-inning complete-game effort against a ranked opponent on the weekend in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over No. 20 LSU. He yielded just one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four in 9.0 innings. He faced just two over the minimum through the first seven innings before allowing a run in the eighth.

For the season, Kilkenny is 7-0 with a 1.49 ERA, .195 opponent batting average and 44 strikeouts in 54.1 innings.

Kilkenny is one of just three players in the nation with a 7-0 mark heading into this week’s action, joined by East Carolina’s Chris Holba and San Francisco’s Riley Ornido. Kilkenny ranks 31st in the nation in ERA, 37th in WHIP (0.90) and 61st in hits allowed per nine innings (6.13).

The Houston, Texas, native became the first Aggie pitcher to start 7-0 since Grayson Long in 2015. The complete game was the first of his career and the first for an Aggie since Kyle Simonds‘ no-hitter on May 7, 2016.

It marked the sixth time an Aggie earned SEC Pitcher of the Week recognition and the first since Brigham Hill earned the honor the first week of April 2017.

Texas A&M returns to action Tuesday when they host the Texas Longhorns in a 6:02 p.m. contest on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
