Queen Theatre Hires House Manager

The Historic Queen Theatre in Downtown Bryan has hired a house manager as they prepare to re-open in May.

Rick Schmidlin, an award-winning film preservationist, silent film scholar and producer-director, spent 35 years in Hollywood producing movies before moving to Bryan for his wife’s job.

Schmidlin will be in charge of the Queen’s programming, which will include 10 movies each week, with each title showing only once.

“I am extremely excited because I think this is going to be a center of gravity for this region because I think everyone will find something they can enjoy,” said Schmidlin, “If they’re a movie lover they’re going to find it there.”

Schmidlin says there will be something for everyone including titles from every genre, released within the last 6 months to the last 60 years.

Sandy Farris, Downtown Bryan’s Executive Director, tells WTAW News the first movie shown at The Queen will be 5th Avenue Girl, which also showed at The Queen’s grand opening in 1939.

According to the Downtown Bryan news release:

Schmidlin’s early career as an assistant lighting director for the iconic Whisky A Go Go on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip led him to music video production for The Doors and other bands. He moved into film production shortly thereafter.

In 1998 Schmidlin produced the re-edit of Orson Welles Touch Of Evil (1958), which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto Film Festivals. He received special awards from The National Society of Film Critics, The New York Film Critics Circle, The Boston Society of Film Critics and The Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

Schmidlin also produced a special Elvis Presley Theatrical Edition of Elvis, That’s The Way It Is. for Turner Entertainment and Turner Classic Movies.
