College Station City Council Continues Support Of New Memorial Day Weekend Event

The Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before Memorial Day, the city of College Station will hold its first Texas Weekend of Remembrance.

The city council at its last meeting agreed with city staff that this could be a signature event to draw out of town tourists.

Jerome Rektorik wanted assurances that the event stayed with the theme of remembering the service of veterans.

Rektorik also questioned if hotel occupancy tax money should pay for the event. Councilwoman Linda Harvell, who is a former convention and visitor’s bureau director, supported the use of HOT funds.

The commandant of the Corps of Cadets, retired general Joe Ramirez, is one of 14 members of the event’s planning committee.

Organizers expect 10,000 to attend the event at Veterans Park…which will include a display of military vehicles, musical performances, and children’s activities.

Active military and veterans will also be invited to compete in seven on seven football and softball tournaments.

At some point, James Benham wants to see a military parade.
