COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Haley Pounds scored in the second minute of action and added two more tallies as the Texas A&M Aggies steamrolled their way to a 5-0 victory against Sam Houston State in exhibition action Sunday evening at Ellis Field.

Pounds broke the scoring seal 1:35 into the match as she put a volley into the back of the net from six yards out. The senior was the beneficiary of a perfect cross from Ally Watt from outside the penalty box on the right flank.

Watt, who redshirted last season as she was playing for the United States National Team at the FIFA World Cup, played a part in the first three goals of the match with two assists and a goal.

In the 18th minute Watt connected with Pounds again. This time the junior weaved through the Bearkats’ defense working her way to the end line to the right of the six-yard box before cutting a ball back to Pounds for the one-touch goal.

Watt scored from 10 yards out in the 32nd minute, receiving a slotted ball from Brittany Crabtree near the penalty spot and sending a shot to the left of a diving keeper for the 3-0 advantage.

Texas A&M scored its final goal of the first half in the 35th minute. With a ball getting pinballed around the penalty box, Addie McCain corralled it before sending a pass to Stephanie Malherbe in the six-yard box. Malherbe unleashed a shot that hit the left post before crossing the line.

The Aggies capped of the cavalcade of goals in the 62nd minute. With the front line in a dead sprint toward goal, Rheagen Smith sent a through ball from 30 yards out finding Haley Pounds in full gait on the right side of the penalty box. Pounds took two strides before sending a missile past the keeper for her third goal of match.

Cosette Morché and Olivia Ausmus combined on the shutout in goal for the Aggies with each playing a half. Ausmus accounted for the only two saves necessary in the contest.

Texas A&M owned heavy advantages in shots (27-5), shots-on-goal (14-2) and corner kicks (8-0).

The Aggies return to action Thursday with a 7 pm exhibition match against Northwestern State on Ellis Field.

Head Coach G Guerrieri
On his team’s improvement…

“I think our big improvement happened in the spring. We had an influx of some great players and great athletes. We saw both goalkeepers come in and add a really good, physical dimension to our game. You look at Addie McCain and the way that she can spray the ball around, and then, of course, you get Ally Watt back. A lot of that stuff was worked out in the spring. The fact that five days into our two-a-days we’ve been able to put on a pretty good show is great.”

Senior Forward Haley Pounds
On the win…

“This night was so much fun. It felt great to finally be back out here. We’ve been in the middle of preseason and working really hard but to come out here, play a real game. It was a blast.”
