CHICAGO – Less than a year after a position change that saw him convert from running back to cornerback, Texas A&M’s Brandon Williams was rewarded by being selected in the third round (No. 92 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals on Friday.

Williams, a former five-star running back from Brookshire Royal High School, had never played defensive back at any level of football prior to making the drastic position change after the Aggies’ 2015 spring drills. Williams, however, embraced the challenge and started all 13 games for the Aggies at cornerback. A 2015 team captain, Williams finished his only season on the defensive side of the football with 37 tackles in run support and broke up seven opponent aerials in pass coverage.

“Brandon always puts the team first and he has a bright, bright future in the NFL,” Aggie head coach Kevin Sumlin said. “I couldn’t be prouder of him and we wish him well as he takes this next step.”

Williams saw action on both defense and offense in 2015, which made him Texas A&M’s first two-way player since the late 1960s. Williams, who transferred to A&M from Oklahoma in 2012, played his first two seasons as full-time running back. He rushed for 269 yard on 44 carries in 2013 and 379 yards on 87 carries in 2014. Additionally, Williams was a standout special teams performer throughout his A&M career, both as a kick returner and on coverage units.

After the 2015 season, Williams received the coveted Aggie Heart Award by vote of his teammates. The Heart Award is presented each season to a senior who displays the intangibles such as effort, desire, determination, competitiveness, leadership and courage. The Aggie Heart Award winner is the player who extends himself to the fullest every time he dons his football gear, regardless of the situation, be it in practice or a game. Additionally, Williams also earned the Weight Room MVP Award in 2015.
