#25 Aggies Earn Win 35 Against Texas State

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 25 Texas A&M softball team (35-17, 9-12 SEC) earned its 35th victory of 2015 on Wednesday, taking down Texas State 2-1 in the final midweek contest of the regular season.

Senior Rachel Fox went this distance for the 20th time this season, earning her 20thvictory. Fox fanned eight batters and issued just two walks, allowing three hits and a single run.

The Bobcats came out strong, loading the bases in the top of the first inning with only one gone, before a 3-2-4 double play ended the inning.

Texas A&M took the lead in the home half of the first on a bomb over the left field wall from junior Cali Lanphear, her eighth of the season.

Holding a 1-0 lead, freshman Erica Russell would reach first on a bunt single in the bottom of the second but couldn’t find her way home.

After Fox retired the Texas State side in order, freshman Ashley Walters bumped the A&M lead up to two with her third home run of the season and second in the last week.

The Bobcats chipped into the Aggie lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single.

Neither team would score over the rest of the game, though the Aggies left two runners stranded, and the game would end at 2-1 in favor of Texas A&M.

Coach Evans Post Game Sound
“We came into this game talking about our defense and how we need to shore things up. Breanna Dozier was really aggressive today, especially on that double play in terms of going to home for that lead base, and Ashley Walters did a great job of turning and understanding she easily had another out at first. I love to see plays like that, as a coach, where our kids are heads up and took the wind out of Texas State’s sails.”

Let’s Hear a Hullabaloo

…for playing your role perfectly. Junior Cali Lanphear has been a staple member of the Aggie batting order this spring and has been a consistent presence, especially in SEC play with a .418 on base percentage. Gig ‘em, Cali!

Coach Evans on Lanphear:

“I think she’s looking really good. You look at her on base percentage and what she’s done for us in the SEC, she’s been doing a great job. She’s doing a really nice job for us and, to get a home run in her first at-bat, especially with the wind blowing in, was a great job for her. Her leadoff double off the wall was nice as well.”
