Aggie Karis Jochen Earns SEC Women’s Runner of the Week Honors

BIRMINGHAM – A top 10 finish among an elite field at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by Minnesota this past weekend earned Texas A&M sophomore Karis Jochen the SEC Women’s Runner of the Week honor, the conference office announced today.

Jochen, of A&M Consolidated, placed eighth among a field of 390 runners as she posted a time of 21:20.0 on the challenging 6,000-meter course. The winner of the women’s race was Arizona State’s Shelby Houlihan (20:34.5), the 2014 NCAA 1500 meter champion, while finishing sixth was Boise State’s Emma Bates (21:02.5), the 2014 NCAA 10,000-meter champion.

The top 10 finishers also included a pair of All-Americans in Rachele Schulist (fifth– 20:49.7) and Leah O’Connor (ninth– 21:30.0) from the winning Michigan State squad that is now ranked No. 2 in the nation. Jochen recorded the same splits as the race leaders through 1,000 (3:27) and 3,000 (10:20) meters of the race as she remained in seventh or eighth place at each split.

Jochen, the second fastest sophomore in the Griak race behind Schulist, recorded the fastest time in the SEC so far this season over the 6k distance. She improved the previous best time in the conference this fall by three-plus seconds. Jochen led the Aggies to a 13th place team finish among the 37 schools competing in the Griak Invitational. Eight of the schools that finished ahead of A&M are nationally ranked in the top 30 this week.
