The field for this year’s Buffalo Stampede half-marathon and 5K will include an internationally known runner.

The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History announced Thursday its partnership with John McInroy, the founder of the Unogwaja (oo-no-GWAW-juh) Challenge and I Wear Red Socks on Friday campaign.

“I invited runners to put their name down on the list of winners and John McInroy is certainly a winner,” said Randy Matson, Olympic gold medalist and Stampede starter.

Known in 70 countries, this is McInroy’s first trip to the United States and Bryan/College Station is his first stop, where he will be running in the Buffalo Stampede, participating in several Museum activities, and visiting the Texas A&M campus.

Museum director Deborah Cowman says a friend of the museum who is also a friend of McInroy learned he was coming to the U.S. and asked him about participating in the Buffalo Stampede.

The October 4th run will also have for the first time, cheer stations where volunteer groups are invited to take positions along the race route and compete for cash prizes.

Buffalo Stampede is part of the museum’s Boonville Days celebration. The living history fair features re-enactors in period costumes, first-hand demonstrations of frontier skills and trades, and eat chuck wagon meals.
