Cougars Edge Aggies with 2-1 Midweek GameSports Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014
HOUSTON – The 18th-ranked Texas A&M softball team (26-10, 7-5 SEC) dropped a narrow 2-1 game at Houston (20-10, 6-0 AAC), Wednesday at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Senior Emily Albus was 3-for-4 with three infield hits on the night to lead the Aggies at the plate, and scored the team’s lone run. Senior Nicole Morgan’s third-inning double put the Aggies on the scoreboard, but wasn’t enough for the win. Texas A&M’s only other hit of the night was a second-inning single to centerfield by senior Jenna Stark.
Houston was able to get just two hits against the Aggies, but took advantage of four walks for the win.
After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the second, the Aggies got on the board in the third. Albus led off in the half-inning with a base hit and moved to second on an error by the Cougars. A hit by pitch put junior Brittany Clopton on first before Morgan batted Albus in with a double to left for the 1-0 lead.
Houston evened the score with a pair of base hits in the bottom of the inning before pulling ahead to a 2-1 lead after three straight walks.
Texas A&M stranded one runner apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings as the Cougars took the win. Sophomore Cali Lanphear and senior Amber Garza drew walks in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, and Albus reached on her final infield hit in the top of the seventh.
Sophomore Katie Marks (12-2) suffered just her second loss of the year with a complete-game effort, allowing two earned run on two hits and four walks while striking out three. UH’s Julana Shrum (7-3) earned the win as she struck out four batters and gave up one earned run on five hits and three walks.
Up next, the Aggies travel to Lexington to face No. 12 Kentucky in a three-game Southeastern Conference series. Saturday and Sunday’s games will be aired on FSN South in the Lexington area and in available regions.
