A&M Soccer Blanks the Houston AcesSports Thursday, March 20th, 2014
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies were victorious in their first contest of the spring session, registering a 4-0 win over Houston Aces South Select at Ellis Field on Wednesday evening.
The Aggies broke the scoring seal in the 13th minute of action as Annie Kunz sent in a goal from six yards out on an assist from Bianca Brinson who had a pair of her shots saved prior to Kunz’s tally.
Kelly Monogue added goals in the 28th and 31st minute to give A&M a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Her second goal was assisted by Haley Pounds who provided a perfect cross from the edge of the penalty box.
Pounds added the final goal in the 84th minute weaving through the defense and scoring from 12 yards out.
The Aggies hit the left post on two occasions, with Monogue clanking a shot off the right post in the 22nd minute and Mikaela Harvey catching the left post in the 83rd minute and having the ricochet trickle across the face of the goal before being pounced on by the South Select defense.
Texas A&M owned a commanding in 37-3 lead in shots, including 19-1 in shots on goal. Michelle Rich prevented further damage with her heroic effort in goal for South Select, making 11 saves in the second half. Former Aggie netminder Kelly Dyer made four saves in the first half.
Renee McDermott, Jordan Day and Taylor Saucier combined on the shutout in goal for the Aggies, playing 30 minutes apiece. McDermott made the only save of the evening for the Maroon and White.
Texas A&M returns to action on Saturday when they travel to the Houston Amateur Sports Park for a 10 am match against the newly minted Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League.
