A&M Police Investigating Century Tree CarvingFeatured Stories, News Tuesday, February 18th, 2014
Texas A&M Police are among those looking for who is responsible for carving initials and a heart into the Century Tree.
Lt. Allan Baron says to his knowledge, this is the first time this has happened.
According to the A&M website, the Century Tree, is a live oak that was among the first to be planted on campus more than 100 years ago. It is the site of numerous marriage proposals, weddings and tourist snapshots because of its immense size and its unique drooping branches, many of which rest on the ground.
Baron says a tree expert from Facilities Services sealed the damaged limb to protect it against weather and insects.
Facility Services estimated the monetary damage at $250. That makes the crime a class B misdemeanor offense of graffiti.
