A&M Co-Sponsoring Conference By Organization Supporting Boycott of Branch Campuses in Israel

Last October, Texas A&M System officials were in Israel announcing plans to locate a branch campus of the flagship university in Nazareth.

In December, the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA) joined a boycott of academic institutions in Israel.

The Austin American-Statesman reports A&M and the University of Texas are co-sponsors of the annual NAISA conference later this year in Austin.

There has been no comment from A&M or the A&M System on the boycott or participating in the NAISA conference, which lists the A&M College of Liberal Arts as a co-sponsor.

The Statesman reports UT is contributing $15,000 to the conference and President Bill Powers has denounced the boycott as an attack on academic freedom.

More from the Associated Press:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A growing international boycott of Israeli schools and universities over the nation’s settlement activities is placing the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University in an awkward position.

The Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/LTfKl3 ) reports that UT President Bill Powers has denounced the boycott as an attack on academic freedom. At the same time, the university is contributing $15,000 toward an annual conference of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, which is participating in the boycott.

Texas A&M is co-sponsoring the May 29-31 conference in Austin. It has remained silent on the boycott as it considers establishing a branch campus in Nazareth, Israel’s largest city with an Arab majority.

The Palestinian-led movement in favor of boycott, divestment and sanctions is known by the acronym BDS.
