Texas A&M Diving Sweeps First Day at AFASports Saturday, February 1st, 2014
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Texas A&M diving team swept all three events on the first day of the Air Force Academy Invitational on Friday at the Cadet Natatorium.
Grabbing victories for the Aggies were senior Jessica Macaulay (The Woodlands, Texas) in the women’s platform dive, junior Ford McLiney (Kansas City, Mo.) in the men’s three-meter dive and freshman Madison Hudkins (Murrieta, Calif.) in the women’s one-meter dive.
Macaulay, the Southeastern Conference runner-up in the platform dive last year, dominated the field with a 20-point win in the platform. Macaulay posted a five-round score of 275.65 which included a pair of huge 65-point-plus dives. It was a de facto “Senior Night” for Macaulay who will miss Saturday’s official Texas A&M Senior Day when the Aggies honor the Senior Class of 2014 while hosting North Texas in an 11 am dual meet.
McLiney topped the 400-point barrier in his victory as he outclassed the field with a score of 404.05, which was more than 30 points better than the runner-up. McLiney had entered the finals as the top seed after posting a score of 368.25 in the prelims. Taking third place was Aggie senior Adam Ruiz with a score of 358.0, while freshman Zachary Stockton placed 10th with a score of 300.75.
Hudkins earned the top seed with a 289.30 point total in the prelims and then was even better in the finals with a winning total of 297.95. Fellow freshman Zoe Alaniz took fourth with a score of 278.65, while another Aggie freshman Courtney Hattie finished 11th with 247.55 after taking the No. 2 seed with a 276.35 in the prelims.
