Texas A&M Women’s Basketball 76, Prairie A&M 27

COLLEGE STATION- No. 16 Texas A&M dominated Prairie View A&M to the tune of its second-biggest victory since 2009 in a 76-27 victory.

Jordan Jones had career-highs with 10 assists and five steals, and Courtney Walker had 11 points and eight assists.

“I really thought we were ready to play tonight,” said Texas A&M Head Coach Gary Blair. “After a couple of misfires, I thought we got into the flow of the game. It starts with the point guard position. That’s two games in a row, Jordan has just gotten her way.”

“I really think we executed well,” said Jones. “We really paid attention to close details like [Assistant] Coach [Bob] Starkey wanted us to, jumped the passing lanes, played their offense pretty well. He basically said take away their first option in their defense, we had to stay focused on their breakdowns.”

The Aggies (2-0) started the game on a 20-2 run, taking a 24-5 lead in just over 10 minutes of play, and did not look back. Texas A&M went on a 14-0 run late in the first half to take a 38-10 lead into the break.

It was the ninth time since the start of the 2012-13 season that the Aggies have held an opponent to 20-or-fewer points in the first half, and the fewest first half points scored by an Aggie opponent since Louisiana Tech scored six on Dec. 12, 2012.

The Aggies went on another large run, this one a 15-0 run, near the start of the second half, and continually increased their lead until the final buzzer.

Texas A&M won its 62nd consecutive non-conference home game against an unranked opponent, and has won 25 of its last 27 against unranked teams. The Aggies have won 14 of their last 15 home openers.

Karla Gilbert led all scorers with 15 points, and Achiri Ade scored 11 points. Both players reached double figures for the second straight game.

This was the largest win for the Aggies since they won 77-26 in the aforementioned Louisiana Tech game in 2012, and the second-largest win for the Aggies since Dec. 8, 2009, when Texas A&M beat North Texas 108-49.

Prairie View A&M (0-2) did not have a player reach double figures, the first time for the Aggies to hold a team to without a double digit scorer since Jan. 20, 2013.

Texas A&M returns to action on Sunday, November 17 at Houston with a 3:30 p.m. tip, but does not return home until Dec. 3 when it hosts San Diego State. The A&M Club of Brazos County is organizing a bus trip to the Houston game. Information can be found here.
