Voter ID Delays for Former House Speaker Jim Wright

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ Former U.S. Speaker of the House Jim Wright says he was denied a state ID card just before Election Day.

Wright tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he realized last week that he didn’t have valid ID to vote on Tuesday. But when Wright went to get a new ID Saturday, he was refused because his long-expired driver’s license and his university faculty ID didn’t meet state requirements.

Wright said he’s arranged to get a valid state ID in time by presenting a certified copy of his birth certificate.

But the 90-year-old Democrat says he worries about others who could be affected by what he called “unduly stringent requirements.”

Election officials say voters without a valid photo ID can cast a provisional vote.
