Aggies Record Top-Five Finish at U.S. CollegiateSports Monday, October 21st, 2013
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Turning in a final-round team total of one-under par Sunday at the challenging Golf Club of Georgia, the Texas A&M men’s golf team logged a fifth-place finish during the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
“We were a lot better today than we were yesterday, especially on the mental side of things,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “We played with a lot more determination. I think this tournament was a great learning experience for us, if you look at missing third place by just a couple shots it teaches our guys the value of every single shot in every round. You really can’t take a day off against this type of competition.”
After the beginning of the final round was delayed an hour due to heavy fog on the Lakeside Course, Oklahoma State (284-281-284=849, -15) secured a one-stroke victory over tournament-host Georgia Tech (279-287-284=850, -14), while Wake Forest, Virginia rounded out the top-four in the standings.
The Aggies (285-292-287=864, E) shared fifth place with UCLA, while Stanford, Iowa, Southern Cal, Washington, Auburn, ETSU, Kent State, Duke and Clemson trailed consecutively on the 15-team leaderboard.
Sophomore Andrew Lister (71-70-72=213, -3) recorded his second top-ten finish of the season by firing a final round of even par to end play in a tie for 10th.
Senior Johannes Veerman (75-77-72=224, +8) and junior Greg Yates (79-73-73=225, +9) finished tied for 50th and 60th, respectively, while sophomore Adrià Arnaus (76-74-80=230, +14), competing as an individual, ended with a share of 73rd place.
“I think that for some of the younger guys on our team this tournament will pay dividends down the line as the season wears on,” Higgins added. “It was a great experience for us and I was really proud of the effort today. Anytime you can get a top-five finish against this field, especially with kind of an off day in the middle, it says you can a lot about the caliber of your team.”
The Texas A&M men’s golf team will conclude the fall portion of its schedule on Oct. 28-29 when the Aggies compete in the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas.
