Mike Slive Criticizes NCAASports Thursday, September 19th, 2013
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive is critical of the NCAA’s rules governing agents, saying they “are part of the problem” and not the solution.
The commissioner told The Associated Press Thursday his hopes for total revamping of “the rules and regulations as they relate to agents” never materialized. It’s an issue that continues to plague the powerhouse SEC, which had 63 players chosen in this year’s NFL draft.
A recent Yahoo report said that agents’ runners provided improper benefits to football players at Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi State. Slive says leagues like the SEC should be allowed to create their own rules to curb such problems.
Despite the problems, Slive says it’s nothing like the situation he inherited in 2002 when five football programs were on probation or under investigation.
