Texas A&M’s Babers Garners SEC Honors

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M middle blocker Jazzmin Babers has been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced today. It is the first such honor for the 6-2 redshirt freshman from Charleston, Ill.

Babers was named to the Texas A&M Invitational all-tournament team after helping the Aggies go 2-1 against the field — which included No. 7 Michigan and No. 16 Florida State – and capture the tournament title based on a sets won-lost ratio tiebreaker.

Babers averaged 1.82 blocks per set, second best in the tournament field. She took match-high honors in blocks against Michigan with a career-high 11, the most blocks by an A&M freshman since Melissa Munsch collected 13 against Colorado on Oct. 24, 2001.

Babers tallied six blocks in the sweep against the Seminoles, including back-to-back stuffs to clinch the 27-25 victory in set one. She also had three blocks in a sweep against Siena.

Babers, who has started every match and played in every set this season, also averaged 2.0 kills and 3.09 points per set during the tournament. For the season, she is hitting .286 and averaging 2.0 kills and 1.18 blocks per set.

The Aggies (7-2) wrap up non-conference play this weekend as they travel to Colorado to face the Rams of Colorado State Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. (CT) in Fort Collins and then take on Northern Colorado Sunday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. in Greeley.

A&M opens Southeastern Conference play at Reed Arena, Sunday, September 29 against Georgia. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
