Fatality Crash South of Hearne

12:53pm update, 17 July:

Dispatchers have released the names of those in involved in the wreck.

Killed was car driver Charles Wheatfall, 39, of Navasota; injured was the gravel truck driver, Billy Higgins, 58, of College Station.

12:30 p.m. update:

DPS Trooper Jimmy Morgan reports both northbound lanes and one southbound lane of Highway 6 have reopened.

The driver of a northbound car crossed the center line and struck the semi head-on.

The driver of the car died and the driver of the semi was taken to St. Joseph in Bryan.

The trucker told investigators the driver of the car had his head down when the car crossed into oncoming traffic.

11 a.m. update courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation office in Bryan:

There has been a fatality on Highway 6 between FM 2549 and Whispering Oaks Road, involving an 18-wheeler gravel truck and a passenger vehicle.

Both the north and southbound lanes are closed while emergency personnel work this fatality accident.

Motorists should find an alternate route for the next few hours.
