ORLANDO – Texas A&M Director of Compliance David Batson has been honored by the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC) with the organization’s top honor, the Frank Kara Leadership Award.
Batson was honored on Thursday at the NAAC Convention being held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando.
“David has a reputation across the country of being one of the best in the business. When I first arrived at Texas A&M last year, every person I came in contact with mentioned what an outstanding job he does in compliance and in working with our coaches and student-athletes,” Texas A&M Athletics Director Eric Hyman said. “David embodies Texas A&M’s values of integrity, excellence and selfless service in everything he does.”
The Frank Kara Leadership Award is named in honor of former University of Minnesota Director of Compliance Frank Kara. Recipients display exceptional leadership and unique vision for compliance initiatives, as well as demonstrating a commitment to furthering the compliance profession.
Batson is in his 14th year as the director of athletics compliance at Texas A&M and his 20th overall year in compliance service in Aggieland. Upon Hyman’s arrival at Texas A&M, he awarded Batson with the Department of Athletics’ first “Teammate of the Month” award for going above and beyond the call of duty. In addition to his compliance oversight, Batson provides color commentary for Texas A&M’s softball radio broadcasts.
A former student-athlete as a cross country runner at Sam Houston State, Batson graduated in 1987 and earned his master’s degree in 1989 while serving as a graduate assistant track and field coach for the Bearkats. He transitioned into athletics administration at Sam Houston State as well as Stephen F. Austin University before joining the Texas A&M staff as compliance education coordinator from 1992-98. He left Aggieland to serve on the NCAA staff (1998-99) before returning to College Station in 2000 as Texas A&M’s Director of Compliance.
Batson and his wife, Shelley, have one daughter, Brynn.
