News release courtesy of the Bryan Police Department:
On May 6, 2013 at 3:16 pm a major accident occurred on SH 47 near Leonard Road. A Dump truck failed to yeild the right of way crossing over SH47 causing an SUV to strike the truck. Both vehicles flipped over and the SUV caught fire.
Felix Chester and a coworker were in the first vehicle to stop and help. While the coworker called for emergency assistance, Mr. Chester went to the burning vehicle to extract the driver. The second vehicle to stop contained Carlos Cardenas who also ran to the burning vehicle. Mr. Chester and Mr. Cardenas were able to extract the driver from the passenger side of the burning vehicle and get her to a safe distance until emergency crews arrived.
The driver of the vehicle was trasported to St. Joseph Hospital for her injuries where she was treated and later released.
These two gentlemen stopped to help a fellow driver in a life-threatening situation without hesitation or concern for their own safety. The driver was not able to get out of the burning vehicle on her own due to her injuries, and without their help might have suffered much more serious injury or death.
Felix Chester and Carlos E. Cardenas are heroes and very deserving of honor and public recognition with a Bryan Police Department Civilian Service Citation and the Bryan Fire Department Citizen Award which are awarded to civilians or members of the general public who distinguish themselves providing aid to persons who are in danger.
These prestigious awards will be presented at the City Council Meeting today at 6:00 pm by the Bryan Police Department and Bryan Fire Department to these two courageous citizens.
