International Horse Barrel Racing at the Expo

An international field of contestants are in the twin cities this week.

The Brazos County Expo is hosting the Diamonds and Dirt Barrel Horse Classic.

The Expo’s Melanie Fuller says 25 states and four countries are represented.

While 700 horses and more than 1,500 hundred people are involved in barrel racing, there are concerts and vendor booths.

The officials with Diamonds and Dirt tell Fuller this will have a $1.7 million dollar impact on the local economy.

Fuller says all facilities on the expo grounds are being used. That includes three arenas, the ballroom and exhibit hall, and additional tents to house the horses.

The event continues through Saturday and there is no admission charge.
