President George H.W. Bush Receives Flash Mob

News release courtesy of Texas A&M University:

Texas A&M University students at the Bush School of Government and Public Service found a novel way to honor the school’s founder, President George H. W. Bush, by holding a flash mob — a sudden assembly of students and others who danced to honor the former president. Their presentation, along with readings from President Bush’s new book, All the Best, was shown on this morning’s Today show on NBC.

The weekend presentation for President Bush had been in the works since the fall of 2012, once it was confirmed that he would be visiting the school this month. The theme for the mob was “Texas country,” in honor of the President’s love of Texas culture. The president was all smiles as he watched the performance unfold. He loved the lyrics that were specific to him and the Bush School and asked if there would be an encore at the end.

Bush School Acting Dean Andrew Card said that it was great fun working with the students on an event that so clearly delighted the President and his family. “We’re all so fond of President Bush, and it’s sometimes hard to find a unique way to honor his contributions and thank him for all he’s done. This event did that, and also allowed our students to have a great time,” he said.

“As the graduating class of 2013, it is our honor to do this for the president,” said Warren Chalklen, Master of Public Service Administration Class of 2013. “He always surprises us and now we got to surprise him. We’ve had a great time creating this flash mob and we hope he enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.”
