Dumezich Named SEC Player of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – After an outstanding week that included two no-hitters, Texas A&M softball senior Mel Dumezich was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today.

Dumezich became the first A&M softball player to be honored by the Aggies’ new conference as she led the squad to a program-best start at 17-0.

The Whiting, Ind., native was 4-0 on the mound last week with a shining 0.00 ERA and her second save of the season. Dumezich allowed just one unearned run on eight hits and one walk over five appearances in the circle, striking out 22 batters and earning three solo shutouts. The senior threw her first no-hitter in the six-inning run-rule of Stephen F. Austin and ended the week with a second no-hit effort against Southeastern Louisiana.

Dumezich also had an outstanding week at the plate, batting .500 for the Aggies through seven games. Her offensive effort included going 9-for-18 with five runs, seven RBI, five doubles, one home run, two walks and one sacrifice hit.

Joining Dumezich on the SEC weekly honors list are Co-Pitchers of the Week Chelsea Thomas (Missouri) and Alison Owen (Mississippi State) and Freshman of the Week Haylie McCleney (Alabama).

The No. 9 Aggies are one of just four undefeated NCAA Division I teams in the country, joining Arizona State, reigning National Champion Alabama and Oklahoma on the list. A&M will host Sam Houston State in a single game at the Aggie Softball Complex, Wednesday at 5 p.m. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to and follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
