Senate Committee Hears A&M System Budget Pitch

Last week, officials of A&M and the university system were in Austin promoting an idea to grow the engineering college at the flagship campus. This week, Chancellor John Sharp and presidents of system universities were before the Senate Finance Committee.

Sharp answered questions from commitee member John Whitmire of Houston about the 25 by 25 initiative.

Comments from John Sharp and John Whitmire.

Responding to a comment by Senator Dan Patrick of Houston about too many engineers with doctoral degrees, Sharp says their initiative is directed at undergraduate students.

Sharp, who is a former state controller and former member of the House and Senate, got a chuckle from Senator Judith Zaffirini of Laredo when answering her question about achieving excellence if there the next state budget restores one percent of a 14 percent cut made two years ago.

Comments from Judith Zaffirini and John Sharp.

Sharp went on to say there’s a danger as the economy is improving of losing highly prized faculty and researchers.
