Landowners Opposed to Union Pacific’s New Railyard

Not everyone is happy about Union Pacific Railroad’s plans to build a $200 million dollar railyard on 1,000 acres between Mumford and Hearne.

Tricia Scamardo says their farming operation will be across FM 50 from the complex.

Scamardo says the railyard will mean the loss of revenue and jobs generated by agriculture.

She also says there will be an increase in traffic and noise near the Mumford schools.

Scamardo says property owners met recently to discuss their concerns and she says they want the railroad to meet with the group.

WTAW’s Bill Oliver visits with Tricia Scamardo.

  1. Susan S. says:

The railroad has yet to meet with landowners but has time to talk with the media.

It is amazing how people that will not lose their property and or their livelihood, can quickly be persuaded that this is a great deal. I feel for the residents and farmers that have spent their lives, and in many cases generations, on this land. It looks like U.P. has adopted the same view of private property rights as our current government has of the Constitution.
