College Station Conference Center Closes

The College Station Conference Center has been closed until further notice.

Parks and Recreation Director David Schmitz says Friday’s action was taken after confirming structural problems first found by a consulting engineer.

Schmitz was among those seeing the sagging roof with the building’s heating and air conditioning unit on top and standing water in the attic.

Schmitz says the issues are in the original portion of the building, built in the mid-1940′s as a high school. There’s nothing wrong with an addition built in the 1980′s but Schmitz says there are no restrooms.

Events displaced by the closure are being moved to other city locations or refunds are being issued. City employees were moved to offices in Central Park.

Schmitz says an update will be presented at the next city council meeting.

WTAW’s Bill Oliver visits with David Schmitz.
