Patient Data Exposed in M.D. Anderson Laptop Theft

HOUSTON (AP) _ Officials with a Houston cancer hospital say a computer stolen from a doctor’s home has personal data on about 30,000 patients.

The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center on Thursday began notifying patients and staff.

Investigators say the theft of the unencrypted laptop computer happened April 30. The information includes names, treatment information and Social Security numbers.

M.D. Anderson spokesman Dan Fontaine says steps are being taken to encrypt all of the center’s computers. Credit monitoring services are being offered to affected individuals.
