Webb Simpson out of the pack to win US Open

Until he started the last nine holes of the US Open, Webb Simpson was hardly ever mentioned as a contender, but the 26-year-old North Carolinian snuck into the lead when all else faded and he won the 112th US Open at The Olympic Club, by a shot over Graham McDowell and Michael Thompson.

The guy who was in control most of the day, Jim Furyk, had a one shot lead until he bogeyed three of the last six holes and took a par on the birdie-able 17th.

McDowell had a chance to tie Simpson on the final hole but his 20-foot birdie try rolled passed.

Tiger Woods was the co-leader after 36 holes but shot 75-73 on the weekend to finish tied for 21st. 17-year old high school senior Beau Hossel started the day just four shots back but scored a 76 on Sunday and wasn’t even the low amateur.

The real winner was the Olympic Club as it’s the first time no golfer finished at par or better since 2007 and the third time in 34 years the winner finished over par.

Simpson wins the Open in just his second try and in his 5th year as a pro.
